The Young People's Debate, for Connecticut middle school students in grades 5-8, is held in May. Students comprising debating teams of 2, debate current and historical legal questions. Topics in past debates have included gun control, drug testing in schools, the death penalty, Native American rights, the Electoral Collegeand, and environmental issues.

At each tournament, students debate the issue twice, once from each side of the resolve. At the end of the two rounds, scores are tallied and certificates and prizes awarded to students, based on win / loss and total points.

The Young People's Debate is co-sponsored by the CCLCE and the Connecticut Bar Association.

2004 Young People's Debate

The middle school 2004 Young People's Debate will be held this May. We will have 2 regional rounds: May 5, 2004 at Eastern Middle School, Greenwich and May 10, 2004 at East Hartford Middle School.

This year's topic is Resolved: That school administrators and teachers do not have the right to censor student publications. (For purposes of this debate students should assume the publication is sponsored by the school and has a faculty adviser.)

Schools may enter different teams in either or both regionals. You may enter as many teams as desired. There is no cost for this competition. Each school is required to bring one judge for every two teams entered. If only one team is entered you are still required to bring one judge.

Please contact the consortium if you have any questions.
