| We the People
Project
Citizen is a portfolio-based civic education project
for middle school students, promoting competent and responsible
participation in state and local government. The project actively
engages students in learning how to monitor and influence public
policy and encourages civic participation among students, their
parents, and members of the community.
As a class project, students work together to identify and
study a public policy issue, eventually developing an action
plan for implementing their policy. The final product is a portfolio
displaying each group's work.
In Connecticut, classes enter their portfolios for a statewide
competition in the spring. The winning project is then submitted
for evaluation in the Project Citizen national
finals. |
We the People
Project Citizen
The national final competition of the We the People
Project
Citizen program was held in Denver, Colorado on July 25-27.
Participating students work together to identify and study
a public policy issue and develop an action plan for implementing
their policy. This year Hillcrest Middle School in Trumbull
submitted the state portfolio to the national showcase, based
on the Connecticut budget deficit.
Portfolios for the 2003 competition will be represented in
a state Project Citizen Showcase at the State Capitol, May 19-23.
The winning state portfolio will be submitted to the National
Showcase in San Francisco, July 21-27. |
